Why Johnson’s ‘get Brexit done’ doesn’t get Brexit done

Why Johnson’s ‘get Brexit done’ doesn’t get Brexit done

You’d think that after 3 and a half years of banging the Brexit drum, Boris Johnson would know what Brexit entails.

Based on his rhetoric in recent months, he doesn’t.

Johnson claims that he has a deal that will ‘get Brexit done’.

The truth?

The deal he has negotiated is nothing more than a withdrawal agreement. It is not a trade deal, or anything even close. This means that if after 11 months from the 31st of January 2020 (which is when he would have us leave the European Union) he has not negotiated a trade deal which can pass through parliament (which no trade expert outside the UK actually believes he can do), the UK would crash out of the EU without any deal at all.

This would cripple our businesses and make us completely reliant on Donald Trump (or whoever is elected in the next American election)

And a trade deal in which we are at the mercy of Donald Trump is a terrifying idea. The president of the US has already told us, openly, that the NHS would be on the table in any trade deal with the US: America would use a trade deal with us to ramp up medicine prices, putting even more strain on our NHS.

A trade deal with America could also open the UK up to having to lower food standards: we could be forced to let chlorinated chicken and more unhealthy, or even dangerous, foods into the UK. And food standards wouldn’t be the only thing we’d be under pressure to reduce. The US is likely to want us to reduce environmental standards and employee rights to put us on a level playing field with them.

And this trade deal would take several years to agree, the same as any other trade deal that the UK wanted to make, albeit with the EU, with China, Japan or any other trade partner.

So, simply put: What Johnson calls ‘getting Brexit done’, is just opening the UK to years and years of uncertainty as we struggle to get trade deals, and as we put ourselves at the mercy of America, Donald Trump and the rest of the world.
